Google Generative AI Leader certification: exam pattern, syllabus and cost in India (2026)
Everything about Google Cloud's Generative AI Leader certification in one place: who it's for, the 90-minute exam pattern, the 4 domains and their weights, the 5 official modules, the USD 99 fee in India, validity, registration and renewal. Facts from Google's official pages.
The Google Cloud Generative AI Leader certification (often shortened to GAIL) is the first Google Cloud certification aimed squarely at people who lead AI adoption rather than build models: managers, consultants, pre-sales, product and business roles. Searches for it from India have grown fast, along with plenty of confusing information about cost, syllabus and passing marks.
This guide sticks to what Google publishes. Every fact below is from Google's certification page, the exam guide and the study guide, checked on Oct 18–19, 2026.
Key takeaways
- 90 minutes, 50–60 multiple-choice questions, online or at a test centre.
- USD 99 plus applicable tax; no prerequisites; valid for 3 years.
- 4 domains: Fundamentals ~30%, Google Cloud offerings ~35%, Techniques ~20%, Business strategy ~15%.
- Google doesn't publish a passing score.
Who is it for?
Google describes a Generative AI Leader as someone with "business-level knowledge of Google Cloud's gen AI offerings" who can identify opportunities across business functions and lead responsible AI adoption. The page states the certification is "for anyone in any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience."
In practice it suits:
- IT managers, delivery leads and project managers;
- pre-sales, solution consultants and account teams selling cloud or AI;
- business analysts and product managers;
- founders and team leads deciding where AI fits in their organisation;
- technical people who want a business-facing credential alongside their skills.

Cost in India
The fee is USD 99 plus tax where applicable, charged when you register. Because it's priced in dollars, the rupee amount depends on the exchange rate and your bank or card's foreign-currency charges on the day you pay. Check the final amount at checkout.
Other costs to plan for:
- Training: optional. Google's learning path and study guide are free to read, and the sample questions are free and untimed.
- Retakes: Google's page doesn't list a retake policy, so check the exam terms when you register.
- Your time: realistically a few weeks of steady study, more if gen AI is new to you.
Syllabus: the 4 exam domains
The exam guide splits the exam into four sections with approximate weights.
1. Fundamentals of gen AI (~30%)
- AI vs machine learning vs deep learning; foundation models, LLMs, multimodal and diffusion models
- Data types (structured, unstructured) and why data quality matters
- ML approaches and the ML lifecycle
- Common gen AI use cases, and limitations such as hallucination, bias and knowledge cut-offs
2. Google Cloud's gen AI offerings (~35%)
The biggest domain, and the one that needs the most memorisation:
- The Gemini app and Gems, Gemini Enterprise, Google Workspace with Gemini, and Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM)
- Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI), Model Garden, Agent Studio and Agent Search
- The Customer Engagement Suite and pre-built AI APIs (Speech-to-Text, Text-to-Speech, Translation, Document AI, Vision, Natural Language and more)
- Agents and agent tooling: extensions, functions, data stores
Google's page notes the exam "was recently updated to reflect branding changes", so make sure your notes use the current product names from the exam guide, not older blog posts.
3. Techniques to improve gen AI model output (~20%)
- Prompt engineering: zero-, one- and few-shot, role prompting, prompt chaining, chain-of-thought, ReAct
- Sampling parameters: temperature, top-p, output length, safety settings
- Grounding and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), embeddings and vector databases
- Monitoring and keeping models useful in production
4. Business strategies for a successful gen AI solution (~15%)
- Choosing a gen AI solution for a business need (scale, customisation, privacy, latency, cost)
- Change management, measuring impact and ROI
- Secure AI (Google's Secure AI Framework, SAIF) and responsible AI: privacy, fairness, transparency, accountability
The 5 official learning modules
Google's learning path covers the domains in five modules:
- Gen AI: Beyond the chatbot
- Unlock foundational concepts
- Navigate the landscape
- Gen AI apps: Transform your work
- Gen AI agents: Transform your organization
Each comes with slides and "try it" exercises in Google AI Studio, such as a parameter playground, RAG in action and building your own agent. Do these hands-on. They turn abstract terms into something you remember under exam pressure.
How hard is the exam?
It's a foundational, business-level exam, but don't underestimate it. Three things make it harder than people expect:
- Product breadth. The offerings domain (~35%) covers many products with similar-sounding names. You need to know which fits a scenario, not just what each one is.
- Scenario questions. Many questions describe a business situation and ask for the best approach. Two options often look plausible; the scenario's detail (privacy, no-code users, existing Workspace, grounding on company data) decides.
- Renamed products. The exam guide uses current names, such as Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform for what used to be Vertex AI. Older study material may confuse you.
People with some cloud or AI exposure usually find the fundamentals and techniques domains familiar; managers new to AI find the business-strategy domain natural but need more time on fundamentals and products. Plan your study around your weaker side.
Common preparation mistakes
- Studying from old blog posts with outdated product names instead of the current exam guide.
- Reading only, without trying the Gemini app, Gems, Gemini Notebook or Google AI Studio yourself.
- Treating the free sample questions as a score predictor. Google says they shouldn't be used that way.
- Skipping responsible AI and SAIF because they "sound obvious". They're a reliable source of questions.
- Booking the exam before doing at least one full-length timed practice.
How to register
- Open the certification page and choose Register.
- Pick online-proctored (check the online testing requirements for your room, ID and computer) or a test centre (search for Google Cloud in the test-centre locator).
- Choose a date and pay the fee.
- On exam day, have a valid ID and, for online exams, a quiet, clear room.
Validity and renewal
The certification is valid for 3 years. Google offers a renewal exam you can take within the renewal eligibility period; the details are in the Renewal FAQs on the certification page.
A word on "dumps" and passing-score claims
You'll see sites selling "exam dumps" and quoting exact passing marks. Google doesn't publish a passing score, and the exam was recently updated with new product names, so old question banks are likely to be wrong. Using leaked exam content can also break the exam terms you agree to. Prepare from the official guide, the sample questions and honest practice tests.
